A community groundbreaking celebration was held on Tuesday, November 15, to commemorate the construction of a new building for Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy. The celebration was held at the America’s Black Holocaust Museum in the historic Bronzeville Neighborhood adjacent to the new location.
“This is a glorious day,” said Dr. Howard Fuller, school co-founder. “I appreciate that it’s not really about me, it’s about that it’s about us. So, even though this school is being built for HFCA, it’s really being built for the black community in the city of Milwaukee.”
In July of this year, Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy launched its Commit to the Future capital campaign, which aims to raise $25 million for the construction of a new high school and renovation and conversion of the existing high school into a feeder middle school. The school has raised $19.5 million and plans to begin construction of the new high school are already underway in Milwaukee’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood.
“I’m excited for what this expansion means for the future of Milwaukee. I’m excited about what the expansion means for opportunities for Milwaukee’s youth,” said Milwaukee Mayor Cavilier Johnson.
Founded in 2004, Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy is a tuition-free, non-profit, public charter high school open to all students in the City of Milwaukee. We serve over 320 scholars, most of whom reside on the north side of Milwaukee, receive free and reduced lunch, and will be the first in their families to attend college when they attend.
